Prescott Area Wildland Urban Interface Commission
Dr. Michael Orr, is a Sioux Falls,South Dakota native. He attended the University of South Dakota Medical School, and went on to complete his Orthopedic Surgery training at the University of Minnesota in 1982. After practicing in St. Cloud, Minnesota for 15 1/2 years,Mike and his wife Leslie relocated to Prescott, Arizona in 1997. His Prescott clinic was located for a time directly adjacent to the Granite Mountain Hotshots office. The tragic loss of the 19 Hotshots in 2013 affected him deeply. The following year, a careless neighbor’s unattended bonfire almost lead to a Wildfire on a windy spring day. After an emergency meeting of concerned neighbors - who residences border the National Forest just south of Thumb Butte - he became a founding member of The Prescott Skyline Firewise Committee. The group joined The Prescott Area Wildland Urban Interface Commission - now also referred to as YavapaiFirewise - in 2014. He succeeded Bob Betts as the chairman of PAWUIC in November, 2017. The organization now includes nearly 40 Firewise communities made up of over 17,000 lots. Now retired from his Orthopedic practice, Mike is very passionate about the Firewise organization. He hopes that ongoing efforts to educate the public and mitigate both private and public properties will lessen the risk of a catastrophic wildfire that could potentially devastate the National Forest, Prescott, and other communities throughout Yavapai County. Through our expanding network of partners we hope to further implement the Cross Boundary and Cross Agency practices which increase our chances of success in this venture.
